Childhood Hunger Community Impact Day 2016

Good nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, is important for establishing a good foundation that has implications for a child’s future physical and mental health, academic achievement, and economic productivity. Unfortunately, food insecurity is an obstacle that threatens that critical foundation. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13.1 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.

The Harlem Renaissance: A Rhapsody in Pink and Green

Urban communities all over the country are under incredible pressure. The economic recession, housing crisis, and limited educational opportunities put a great deal of stress on families. Furthermore, each year thousands of urban students qualify to attend a four-year university but lack the financial means to make that dream a reality. The AKArama Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Omega Chapter seeks to make a difference in the Chicagoland community by providing service programs to address the needs of the community and awarding scholarships to deserving students.  Each year we have an annual fundraising drive that culminates in our AKArama Gala.
